The Smack Talk Forum and Utah

This forum is so underused... thought I'd post a quick observation.
Nate and I were just discussing our race in Salt Lake last weekend and we both noticed that many racers down there were just plain rude and need to be smack talked about.
We were both cussed and sworn at several times while fighting for the good lines and corners. I saw another racer push a guy off the worn route into the deep snow as they passed (while both yelled at each other). One guy pushed me twice while I tried to pass him... he crashed himself and went down in a flaming ball of expletives (obviously because he had taken his hands off the bars... it was impossible to remove them and stay in control in the snow). I saw several riders run right over other riders bodies & bikes when they could have easily gone around. Even saw one guy kick a bike out of his way that had fallen in his path. As the leaders started to lap the back of the field they would yell "get out of the way" to whoever was in front of them expecting all sorts of entitlement since they were so fast. At one point the guy I was following came up onto a slower rider and yelled to "move over!"... the rider pulled over and actually had to stop in the deep snow while we both passed. Am I wrong in thinking this was all a bit agro???
Now I don't know if people were just super fired up in the snow/ice/mud or what... but it definitely did not seem like how our 'cross scene runs locally. I think it was so obvious to us both because it was so different to what we were used to. I regularly hear "sorry", etc in our own races when somebody screws up and everybody is way more laid back in general. I've had guys around here actually help me ride the corners faster by suggesting lines etc... even during a race! The guys down there were SERIOUS and it reminded me a bit of the road racing scene. In my book I'd say we've got it good up here in Idaho...
(This isn't meant to bash them at all... just what stuck out to me. We had an awesome time!)

Interesting! I agree we have it pretty good here. I have had gone down a couple of times this year only to hear Ron Miller or Bill Reed encouraging me to get back up an into the race. So I guess this is just a big lovefest thank you to everyone for the fun and friendly competition.

It is too bad they are taking...
It is too bad they are taking it too seriously. It is funny to me that these guys who are doing this for fun and not for a living get so beyond worked up. While the true professionals would never have that attitude, if they wanted to keep their job or sponsors long that is. I love our atmosphere here and must say that if, as a promoter, I hear of any one person having repetitive issues like the ones mentioned, or complete disrespect for their fellow racers, they won't be racing at any of my races in the future. I am all for competitive racing but their is limit and if its too bad some people have to cross it.
I guess what I mean is /clap and /cheer to all the good guys and gals we have in the area :)

Also,
I've seen several examples here where when a rider crashes, you here other races ask, Are you Okay?, Need Help? Or, when someone makes a mistake, say, "Sorry about that, I took a bad line!". I've NEVER seen anything here that closely resembles Eric's comments above. Wait a minute, I have, it's been at the road races during the summer. Let's keep our Idaho Cross scene what it is today. Good natured, competitive, with good sportsmanship displayed by all.
you are perfectly okay to...
you are perfectly okay to bash Utah, that whole state sucks. taking cyclocross too seriously sucks. if they take it too seriously they are like hell. i have no problem calling out utah people i hate that state for about sixteen different reasons. they have good snow and some attractive women, and i work with a nice person from there, but other than that, you are right, we should race here, enjoy the fun courses and go to portland if we want more or different competition. that is my plan and i will stick to it.
